Sitecore Two Editor Ribbons

Today, a friend on the Sitecore Community posted a question about the Ribbon found on the Experience Editor. He was facing an issue whereby there we two Ribbons as shown below

It happened after they have updated their Sitecore Instance from 6.5 to 8.0. One main point that help me to guide him was performing an Inspect Element of both ribbon being displayed. The following URLs were provided:

  1. /sitecore/shell/Applications/WebEdit/WebEditRibbon.aspx
  2. /sitecore/client/Applications/ExperienceEditor/Ribbon.aspx

The first URL is for the Page Editor which is available in previous Sitecore Version (6.x to 7.x) and the second one is for the Experience Editor which is available in Sitecore Version 8.x.

In order to fix this issue, you need to check the Sitecore.ExperienceEditor.config. Search for the <pageextenders> tag. It should be as shown below:

<pageextenders>
  <!-- Uncomment the page extenders below and comment the "Sitecore.ExperienceEditor.Speak.Ribbon.PageExtender.RibbonPageExtender" to switch to old SheerUI-based Experience Editor ribbon. -->
  <!--<pageextender type="Sitecore.Layouts.PageExtenders.PreviewPageExtender, Sitecore.ExperienceEditor" />
  <pageextender type="Sitecore.Layouts.PageExtenders.WebEditPageExtender, Sitecore.ExperienceEditor" />
  <pageextender type="Sitecore.Layouts.PageExtenders.DebuggerPageExtender, Sitecore.ExperienceEditor" />-->

  <pageextender type="Sitecore.Shell.Applications.Preview.SimulatedDevicePreview.PageExtenders.PreviewExtender, Sitecore.ExperienceEditor" />

  <!-- Page extender for SPEAK-based Experience Editor ribbon. -->
  <pageextender type="Sitecore.ExperienceEditor.Speak.Ribbon.PageExtender.RibbonPageExtender, Sitecore.ExperienceEditor.Speak.Ribbon" />
</pageextenders>

The reason why the Page Editor Ribbon was appearing is because the the Page Extender for the old ribbon was uncommented along with the Experience Editor Ribbon. Due to this, Sitecore will load both Ribbon. However, you may see only the Experience Editor Ribbon as it is loaded after the Page Editor Ribbon. This is why part of the Page Editor Ribbon is visible.
